MEDIA STATEMENT

The National Hauora Coalition (NHC) faces a busy month as it prepares to welcome it’s 17 new Waikato practices on 1st October 2019, establish its Waikato office and launch its new local Tiakina te Tangata mobile Long Term Conditions service.

The NHC plans to have 16 staff joining their Waikato Locality Manager and working out of a new Hamilton office in early October. Advertising has been placed for positions covering Practice Support Facilitators, General Practice Support Nurses, Team Leader, Long Term Conditions Nurses, Kaimanaaki-whānau as well as support staff and additions to its digital team, Mōhio.

It will also be establishing Tiakina te Tangata, a mobile long term conditions service that will draw on the resources and knowledge gained from the NHC’s Mana Tū programme. Mana Tū has successfully taken a Whānau ora approach to tackling long-term conditions across Northland and Auckland as part of a research project funded by the Ministry of Health, Health Research Council of New Zealand, and Healthier Lives National Science Challenge. The Tiakina te Tangata service will utilise Kaimanaaki-whānau and Long Term Conditions Nurses to deliver care alongside the NHC’s new Waikato practice network.

“It’s an exciting time for the NHC in the Waikato” says Simon Royal – Chief Executive of the NHC. “We look forward to continuing to work closely with the Waikato District Health Board and our Waikato practice network to continue to drive health outcomes for whanau and the communities we serve”.

The NHC is the largest Māori PHO in New Zealand and will be serving an enrolled population of over 220,000 patients from 1st October 2019 under its vision of Mana Whānau – Whānau Ora.

In addition to advocating for a health system that delivers equity, the NHC seeks a true partnership for Māori - so that the Crown and health agencies adhere to a more enlightened policy of empowering Maori to lead our own solutions instead of assuming that they know best.
