Hoturoa was known as the high priest and commander of Tainui waka. Hoturoa was born in Hawaiki and he was the son of Auau-te-rangi and Kuotepo. Hoturoa was middle aged when he made the voyage to Aotearoa. In Hawaiki he tried his best to keep his people away from war and skirmishes, so he joined the main flotilla that migrated to Aotearoa in 1350 AD. Hoturoa had two wives who were Whakaotirangi and Marama-hura-kiko, from the pair of them he had six beautiful children.
