Huakaiwaka was the paramount chief of the Waiōhua tribe that settled throughout this region. Huakaiwaka is translated as ‘The Eater of Canoes’ and he was responsible for unifying several tribes into Waiōhua. The territory of Hua covered all of Tāmaki Makaurau in the 17th Century which continued through to the time of Kiwi Tamaki in the 18th Century with pā sites and settlements throughout the isthmus.
