Kaiwhare traverses the Manukau Harbour and he is another guardian of the waters, Kaiwhare is as large as a whale and has had interactions with two particular ancestors, the first was Hape who he helped transport from Hawaiki to Manukau to see his family. The second encounter was when Kaiwhare had developed a taste for human fishermen in Aotearoa, the taniwhā slayer known as Tāmure was called upon to deal with Kaiwhare. Tāmure struck Kaiwhare with his magic greenstone club mere pounamu wounding him gravely, and from that day forward Kaiwhare only ate octopus and crayfish.
