Taramainuku is a renowned taniwhā who lives in the Manukau Harbour. He provided support and protection for Tainui waka when it crossed Te Tō Waka between the Tāmaki River and the Manukau Harbour. Taramainuku escorted Tainui waka until it reached its final destination in Kāwhia, and then he returned to Manukau as one of the guardians of the harbour.
