Toi Whānau Health: The Onehunga Clinic shaping the future of healthcare for whānau

On Wednesday, 5 March 2025, The National Hauora Coalition (NHC) proudly invited mana whenua to Toi Whānau Health, its new GP clinic in Onehunga to witness the unveiling of the whakapapa kōrero.

On the morning of the event, mana whenua was invited to karakia and unveil the clinic’s room names, each reflecting ngā kōrero ā ō mātou tūpuna (the stories of our ancestors). They are in honour of Taramainuku, Kaiwhare, Maungakiekie, Te Pane o Mataoho, Huakaiwaka, Hoturoa, and Te Maanukanuka o Hoturoa.

“Toi Whānau Health is an extension of NHC’s ongoing commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for whānau,” says NHC Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Murray.

“We are deeply honoured to have mana whenua gift these names to the clinic rooms, as their stories of guardianship, unity, leadership and protection inspire the mana-enhancing care that Toi Whānau Health is focused on providing.”
At Toi Whānau Health, keeping fees affordable is a priority, ensuring that financial barriers never stand in the way of whānau receiving quality, compassionate medical care.

Clinic doors are open Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, providing convenient access to healthcare services, including rongoā Māori. Walk-in GP and nurse appointments are also frequently available.

Practice Manager Kelleigh Embers (Ngāti Hine, Ngāpuhi) says that Toi Whānau Health stands as a beacon of support for the people of Onehunga and the surrounding areas.

“At Toi Whānau Health, we genuinely care about the wellbeing of our hāpori. Whether it’s a routine check-up, a kōrero about their concerns, or urgent care, our dedicated team is here to ensure that our patients feel comfortable, seen, understood and supported at every step of their healthcare journey.”
