HEALTHY HOMES GIVE TAMARIKI
THE BEST START IN LIFE
HE KAINGA ORA HE TĪMATANGA PAI
Many common illnesses are caused by poorly ventilated, cold and overcrowded homes, with children in particular being affected. The AWHI Hub programme is a free initiative that works to improve housing conditions for whānau in the south Tāmaki Makaurau area.
The results are encouraging. By increasing the number of healthy homes, there is less risk of exposure to preventable housing related conditions, such as Acute Rheumatic Fever and respiratory tract illnesses.
According to the Ministry of Health, an evaluation team, public health experts and researchers, early findings show the AWHI Hub programme has decreased hospitalisation for respiratory illness and whānau report their homes are warmer and drier, with less sickness overall.
The programme connects families and community providers to local services and organisations that help create healthy homes. At the heart of our approach is ensuring whanāu have the skills, confidence and knowledge to make positive choices. See the Awhi Hub case study.
